Hello,
Ax, if this is a problem with BRMlab, then we should do something so that we can keep our tools/hacks in working order for all to use and enjoy.
Actually its not "problem with BRMlab", is problem with many people using the tools (with different levels of experience) coupled with no-one being able to dedicate enough time to keep the tools in shape.
Ax
This is a similar claim as having a tool walk away, stolen. I've heard the typical answer, "Well, it's a hackerspace… What can we do?"
If we have member problems, we need to implement member solutions. I'm not an advocate of surveillance, but we do have some surveillance in the lab. Perhaps we can have something less intrusive, such as a check-out system regarding tools or equipment being used. I'm thinking of a device like a vending machine where we'd use our BRMrfid to check-in and check-out equipment. Maybe then using the generated contact list of people that last used a tool, we could have a dialog with them if it looks trashed or missing? Maybe something as simple as taking a photo when a member last used a tool would be enough proof that they left it OK. I remember several times the hardware lab being complained about. Sadly, trashing it still goes on very much. A check-out system would ensure returns for equipment since it might mean members paying for missing equipment. We also have many testing equipment and lab power supplies that can be secured/installed permanently. Yes, this limits mobility, but guest what… it'll stay there for anybody! :) Thoughts?
